A guide to your time in Tofino, BC

Things to do in Tofino

Tofino, BC is a magical place here on Vancouver Island that truly makes us feel content whenever we’re there. From the lush rainforest trails to the world-class surf, it’s the perfect place for adventure lovers like us. Whether you’re seeking an activity filled weekend or just looking to hang on the beach, we’ve got a list of things to check out on your next trip to Tofino!

Surf

Surfers in Tofino at Chesterman Beach

The largest attraction of Tofino has got to be surfing. Sitting on the very west coast of Vancouver Island, it is THE spot in Western Canada to surf. If you’ve never been surfing, no sweat! The beaches are perfect for beginners and pros since the big waves are out-back and the white water up-front is perfect for catching your first waves. That said, if you’ve never been surfing, we definitely recommend taking some lessons since the ocean is not something to mess with! With strong rip currents and unsupervised beaches, it’s important to learn from the pros so that you’re mindful of surf etiquette and aware of ocean safety.

We recommend checking out lessons or rentals at Pacific Surf Co. They’re located at the heart of Tofino and have great staff who are always down to help! A bonus is that they’ve got cool merch and carry Tuff Stuff that’s made by our friends over at Green Room Body Co!

Another surf related activity is Tofino’s annual women’s surf competition held in October called Queen of the Peak. Being a women-run business here at Nature Bee, we love to watch and support other women and what better way to do so than watching a sick surf competition!

Stroll

Forest boardwalk in Tofino by Cox Bay

If you prefer to keep your feet on the ground or are looking for another activity to add to your itinerary, there are a few hikes around town that we recommend you check out! A crowd favourite is the Cox Bay Lookout. This quick and dirty hike takes you up the ‘hill’ found on the southern end of Cox Bay to reveal an incredible view of the entire beach. Just be mindful that you’re likely to be whacking bushes on your way up!

For a more mellow trail, check out the Rainforest Trail found in Pacific Rim National Park. Unlike the Cox Bay Lookout, this trail has a clear pathway and takes you on a stroll through the beautifully dense rainforest!

Beach

Hanging out at Chesterman Beach in the summer

Even if you’re not keen to surf, there’s so much to do on the beaches of Tofino! One of our favourite beaches to hang out at, have small (and safe) fires, and watch the sunset at is Chesterman Beach! If you’re planning on bringing snacks, try to bring them in plastic-free packaging and be sure to take everything you came with (we don’t need any more micro-plastics floating around the ocean). The vibes at this beach are unreal and while you’re strolling up and down the beach, you can check out some tide pools. Long Beach is another beautiful beach (no beach fires allowed here) that you’re going to want to visit. Although you have to pay for this one since it’s found inside the national park, it’s so worth checking out for its LONG shoreline and to see the majestic Incinerator Rock!

During the winter seasons, storm watching is another huge attraction. Sit back and watch the waves and wind fire in! If you’re looking for a luxurious storm watching experience, look into Pacific Sands’ storm watching package.

Nosh

Vegan food in Ucluelet at Yayu

After all those activities, it’s time to eat! If you’re looking to hit up a big tourist attraction, drop by the original Tacofino truck for irresistible burritos! Shelter is another great option is you’re looking for some genuine cozy Tofino vibes. If you’re feeling a bit fancier, Wolf In The Fog is a great choice. They feature fresh and local seafood dishes but even if you’re not keen for seafood, there are plenty of other tasty options!

For all our vegan friends or just for anyone looking for delicious, healthy food, stop by Yayu in Ucluelet! Over in Tofino, stop by Bravocados for all-day vegan breakfast and much much more.

For your morning cup of joe, visit Rhino Coffee House found right across from Pacific Surf Co. While you’re there, indulge yourself in some of their delicious donuts. For your evening brew, grab a flight or two at the beautiful Tofino Brewing Co for good beer and good vibes!

If you’ve never been to Tofino, you’re definitely going to add it to the bucket list! Once we’re there, we never want to leave and we’re sure a lot of you will feel the same way.
